Update on the cache of early 1800s documents we found in January. We have begun processing them and have uncovered the acceptance letter of John Law for his appointment as Vanderburgh County’s first prosecutor.
His 1818 appointment must have been one of his first jobs as a practicing attorney, as he was admitted to the Bar in 1817. He went on to serve as a judge in various circuits and served in the Indiana House of Representatives. He served as judge for the Federal Court of Land Claims under appointment by President Franklin Pierce in 1851.
He was an investor, an author, and later served in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Congressman from the Indiana 1st Congressional District from 1861-1865.
A ceramic bust is dedicated to him as part of an exhibit in the Old Court House.
